Car Scrappage
If you have an older car that isn’t good for your wallet or the environment then maybe you should take advantage of the car scrappage scheme. The UK began this programme in 2009. Everyone in the UK that has a car that is at least ten years or older can participate in the car scrappage scheme. There is a limited amount of money that has been put aside for this programme so people wanting to be part of the car scrappage should not wait any longer.
The person taking part in the car scrappage must have owned the vehicle for at least twelve months. If you meet these criteria then you can be eligible for two thousand pounds toward a new car or van.
Manufacturers and the government will contribute a thousand pounds each toward the scheme. There is only three hundred million pounds that are allotted for car scrappage scheme use. That works out to be about three hundred thousand motor sales.
If the funding is still available the car scrappage scheme will last until the end of February of 2010. While this is a voluntary programme for dealers and manufacturers it is expected that most of them will participate in the offer to consumers.
There will be no discrimination among the make or model of the cars or vans that are eligible for participation. Another plus to the car scrappage scheme is that there is no limit to the amount of vehicles an individual or business can purchase.
However, you can only use one car scrappage scheme discount per vehicle purchase. So this means that you can’t turn in two cars for one car purchase and get a total of four thousand pounds off.
You will not have to hold onto the new vehicle for any period of time. Consumers can use the car scrappage scheme to trade in a car and get a new van instead of a car. It can also be used on the reverse situation of an old van for a new car.
If you happen to be in charge of purchasing fleet vehicles or are a Motability customer you are also entitled to participate in the car scrappage scheme.
The requirements for the old vehicle are that it doesn’t exceed 3.5 tonnes. It must have been registered in the UK before 1999. The registered keeper must retain a UK address and possess a current MOT certificate. No financing can be held on the vehicle being used for a trade in the car scrappage scheme.
If you are a dealer you cannot trade in your own car, stolen cars can’t be used, and finally insurance write offs are excluded.
To be eligible for purchase the new vehicle must not weigh more than 3.5 tonnes and be a UK specific vehicle. The vehicle can only be registered after the start of the car scrappage scheme. It also must be new at registration with no previous keepers. The person turning in the old vehicle must be the same one that is purchasing the new vehicle. This programme should help get gas guzzlers off the road and save money for fuel in the future.
