Domain Names

A domain name is a name given to a collection of devices.  These devices belong to a domain that is managed by members or an administrative boundary.  In other words a domain name is going to be something like a URL address or even an email address.  Basically when you create a website it has to have a domain name in order to be published.  This domain name is going to be yours until you decide to sell it.  In fact there are some companies that will sell you a domain name in order to get your site on the internet.
Domain names are a complex system in the internet world and a bit tough to describe.  You have your basic domain names such as URLs which help you locate the site, and then you have the DNS servers that host the domain.
In order to launch a site you need to have the domain name.  By seeking a company with a server you are able to buy the domain name and then publish the website.  When choosing where your domain is going to be located, you want it on an easy to find server that will make sense.  For example if you are selling products only to the UK, then you want a domain name that will have a relationship to servers in the UK so that site will appear.  You don’t want to be on a domain in a place like India if you are unwilling to ship your products there.
It is best to hire a web hosting company in order to get your domain name. A web hosting company will be able to set up everything for you, which makes it a lot easier than figuring out where the site should go and make sure that you have everything needed to launch the site properly.
These web hosting companies like domain name companies can be found by searching the internet or in your local internet shop.  For example, your internet company will be able to either offer a web hosting company to use or even be a hosting company that supplies the domain names.
New domain names need to be registered.  If you are purchasing a domain name and registering one it will be for a year term.  You can prepay up to ten years for the name, but most often the company asks for a year term.  A lot of individuals don’t keep track of their websites over a long period of time.  In fact some believe they just need to place the domain name on the web and tell people about their site.  Unfortunately sites take a little maintenance which is why you are normally charged on a yearly basis.  This way the hosts get rid of inactive sites.
There are even after market domain names that you can purchase.  These are expired names that have been returned to the available pool to be re-registered with a company.  It is up to you to find the appropriate company to get your site launched.
