Mattresses

Having chosen a mattress, many people place it in position, add bedding to it and leave it to fend for itself. Most consumers give very little thought to basic care and maintenance of a mattress. Your bed and mattress are the most important pieces of furniture you have in your home and yet they receive the least attention of all.

Purchase a mattress protector. Choose one that is easily washable and easily replaced on the mattress. Some mattress protectors are designed to reduce dust mite allergies. If you have a problem with allergies then this is a good choice to make.

Regularly vacuum your mattress. This helps remove dust, dust mites and any other debris that can accumulate in between the crevices of the mattress.

Turn your mattress periodically to ensure even wear. Make a turn so that the bottom is now on the top. Rotate the mattress so that the base is now at the head. Some modern mattresses do not require turning. These are manufactured so as not to be turned over. However, you should still rotate the mattress so that it gets even wear over a long period. Try to do this with one other person. Straining your self will not do your back any good.

Mattresses never stay pristine clean. Over time, they will need to be cleaned.  Here are some tips you can try to get your mattress clean and odour free:

  • Remove any dirt, dust and anything else from the mattress by vacuum cleaning.
  • If the dirt is only on the surface, use commercial upholstery cleaners following the manufacturer’s instructions.
  • If areas are more soiled then use a mixture of laundry detergent and cold water. Agitate to form plenty of suds. Using a dry sponge, scoop up suds and rub vigorously with the sudsy sponge over the soiled areas. Be careful not to soak the area.
  • More stubborn stains can be removed by spraying the area with white vinegar. Leave for approximately 5 minutes then sprinkle some bicarbonate of soda. Wait until the fizzing stops then leave to dry. When dry, vacuum any residue from the bed.
  • Some tough stains require more drastic action. Hydrogen peroxide can remove a number of stains. Use a dampened sponge or cloth with the hydrogen peroxide and blot the stain. Test a small area of the mattress fabric before attempting to use hydrogen peroxide.  Some fabrics can be damaged by use of hydrogen peroxide.
  • Odours from urine or vomit can be removed by using a solution of ½ vinegar and ½ water in a spray bottle.  Spray the mattress and allow the mattress to dry thoroughly. The original odour may be removed and will leave a vinegary smell which will fade with time.
  • Commercial products are available. Check your local stores and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Some products are citrus based and will leave a fresh citrus odour on the mattress.

Your new mattress is an investment. Care and maintenance will prolong its life. Regular cleaning will control a build up of dust mites and prevent allergies. It will also keep your mattress hygienic and usable for many years.
