Used 4x4

When you are out buying a used 4x4, things could prove to be fun. This will be the time where you are able to kick a few tyres and just talk about 4-wheel drives to your friends and also learn what the best off-road vehicles are. It is a great idea to know what you are looking for, but at the same time you also want to try to keep an open mind when you are out there looking at all the vehicles. For instance, you might be persistent and want that particular model, but it will take the one standing next to it to change your mind completely.

Start by walking around the vehicle and inspect it from all angles. Inspect the roof; just look for any sign of damage and rust. If you want to, simply drop to the pavement and slip under the vehicle. Inspecting under the vehicle is the one thing many people forget, and many people also forget to inspect the roof. If you are too short and cannot see the roof, open the door and use the flooring of the jeep to get there. Do not make the same mistake if you have done this before. Before you go and inspect a vehicle, note down all the things that you would like to inspect before making your decision as a reminder.

If you have no idea what is going on inside a vehicle’s engine, have a mechanic accompany you and let him get himself dirty and tinker wherever he wants. Look at what you are interested in. It is advisable that you educate yourself when it comes to things like stock components and those aftermarket upgrades you are inspecting. Other things that you want to know a little about are smog and registration laws for the state you live in before deciding to buy a used 4x4. Some states will force you to pay up when it comes to legalising your vehicle.

Make sure that your mechanic or you check the fluids. Look at the fluid level and the condition, although you are only able to tell what the condition of the fluid is when it is either seriously old or burned. Some fluids darken when used and this is not always an indicator that it has aged. If fluids are dark brown and/or grainy with sediment, the fluid should be replaced and it could also be telling you that there are other things wrong.

Once you have inspected the vehicle and you are satisfied, it is a good time to take it for a drive. Do not turn on the radio. Listen for anything that does not sound ordinary, for example clanking, grinding and clunking. Make sure you shift the vehicle’s transfer case and also the transmission through its gears while you are driving and while the vehicle is parked. Before using the brakes, make sure you test them. After the inspection and the test drive, if the vehicle still satisfies you, make your offer.
